Note: BMI is a useful tool for population-level assessment, but has limitations. It does not account for body composition (muscle vs. fat), fat distribution, age, sex or ethnicity. For a complete assessment, consult a healthcare professional. In the United States, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) adopts the WHO BMI classification for adults and provides supplemental guidance on race/ethnicity-specific considerations (e.g., lower BMI thresholds for overweight in Asian American populations).
